It can be hard to find dubstep albums mainly because few of the top dubstep artists are signed to major labels, also due to the experimental nature of the music often it is just released online and never complied into albums. There are several dubstep compilation albums full of tracks from various artists which are released semi regularly and these could be a good start to exploring the genre

A recent dubstep album is Welcome Reality by Nero it was recently featured on Triple J in Australia. Famous and highly regarded dubstep albums include Skream! and Outside the Box by Skream, the self titled album by Magnetic Man, Katy on a mission by Katy B, O.M.G.! by Rusko, Burial and Untrue by Burial and Saxon by Chase and Status. While albums are good most dubstep fans would be better served by downloading individual tracks from sites like iTunes, eMusic and Juno Downloads.

What’s dubstep – it’s a type of electronic music distinguished by slower beats, usually around 140 bpm, minimal vocals if any at all, complex dirty sounds and wobble bass, it developed in the UK in the 90s and spread around the world from there.

What’s a wiki – a wiki is a central storage location for information, that can be added to and edited by a large group of people. It’s basically a community brain dump, the most famous wiki is Wikipedia which aims to become an encyclopedia. The benefit of a wiki is that allows many people to collaborate to build up a large collection of knowledge quickly, the downside it that anything written in the wiki will reflect the opinions and beliefs of the writer which others may disagree with, often there are arguments and editing wars when two people of opposing opinions compete to have their opinion shown as the most current article on the wiki.

So the dubstep wiki is a wiki related to dubstep, feel free to browse around and absorb some cool information, if you feel like you have something to add please sign up and add some new articles or edit some of the existing ones. Those of you unfamiliar with dubstep may be wondering exactly what it is, it’s a type of electronic music distinguished by slower beats, usually around 140 bpm, minimal vocals if any at all, complex dirty sounds and wobble bass.

Dubstep originated in the UK in the 90s it’s hard to say exactly when and we’ll leave that debate to the music critics and historians, from the UK it spread to Europe and then to North America and the rest of the world. It’s influence is starting to spread right into the mainstream, this is especially visible in hip hop and house music. Overtime the original experimental feel of dubstep has been evolved into a more mainstream friendly style which purists don’t consider real dubstep, while the original style is now often called experimental, I leave these debates to the music critics and the elitists who want to exclude people from the scene, what’s important to me is finding and enjoying the music I like to listen to and connecting with people with similar tastes and attitudes. Dubstep was recently added as a word in the Chambers dictionary officially cementing it’s place as part of the human psyche and our shared culture. It will continue to evolve and influence modern music for years and even generations to come.

Famous dubstep artists include Skream, Katy B, Skrillex, Chase and Status and Nero. These are the dubstep artists which have been most visible to me in Perth Australia, I mainly get exposed to dubstep through Triple J.
